Monitoring of habitats and species of European importance in Slovakia

Project title: Monitoring of habitats and species of European importance in Slovakia

Brief description of the project:

The aim of the project is to implement nationwide monitoring of species and habitats, to ensure the availability of up-to-date data through an information system and, last but not least, to provide a data base for the preparation of two reports on the status of species and habitats of European importance. The first report under Article 12 of the Birds Directive and Article 17 of the Habitats Directive will be submitted in July 2025 and the second for the period 2025-2030 in 2031. The reports will contain detailed information and maps for 236 species of birds, 223 species of plants and animals and 66 types of habitats included in the current lists of the European Commission for the Slovak Republic.

In order to ensure the completeness and correctness of the above reports, it is necessary to maintain the continuity and system of national monitoring of species and habitats of European importance at permanent monitoring sites.

The results of the monitoring will be used to ensure the objectives of the EU directives, in particular the maintenance and improvement of the status of species and habitats of European importance and the preservation of biodiversity in Slovakia and within Europe.

The objectives of the project will be fulfilled through the implementation of monitoring at permanent monitoring sites (TML) according to the established methodology and the resulting frequency. Monitoring will take place at 12,822 TML (measurable indicator PO172 – Number of sites where species and/or habitat monitoring is carried out). The monitoring data will be processed and recorded within the Comprehensive Information Monitoring System (hereinafter referred to as the “CMIC”), the administration of which as well as the necessary adjustments are part of the project. The publicity of the monitoring and its interconnection with other areas of nature conservation and site management will be ensured through a public portal and the preparation of professional publications. An important part of the project is to increase the professional competence of the beneficiary’s internal employees and partners.
