Flora of the Veľká Fatra
The Veľká Fatra is one of the botanically richest areas of Slovakia. More than 1,200 species of higher plants have been recorded on its territory.
Endemics: The rarest species include the Fatra carnation, the Fatra bellflower and other endemic taxa bound to the limestone substrate.
Orchids: More than 40 species of orchids grow in meadows and forests, including the slipper orchid, one of the rarest orchids in Europe.
Alpine flora: On the rock walls and ridges there are relict species of alpine character – edelweiss, saxifrage and gentian Clusiov.
