Forest communities
Forests cover more than 80% of the national park’s area and form one of the best-preserved forest areas in Central Europe.
Fir-beech forests: The dominant forest community is from 600 to 1,200 m above sea level.
Spruce forests: At higher altitudes (above 1,200 m), the forests pass into a spruce step. The upper border of the forest is around 1,400 – 1,500 m above sea level.
Dwarf pine: Above the upper border of the forest, there is a zone of dwarf pine (Pinus mugo), typical for the highest positions of the mountains.
