Visiting rules

Veľká Fatra conceals many beautiful corners and provides stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The most enticing feature of any mountain range is probably conquering the main ridge. It’s no different with Veľká Fatra, which throughout the entire hike offers magnificent views of the surrounding landscape and neighboring mountain ranges such as the Low Tatras, Chočské vrchy, Little Fatra, and in good visibility, the High Tatras.

The elevation of the main ridge above the valleys is not great (600–900 m). Any point on the main ridge can be reached by hiking from the valley heads in approximately 2-3 hours. A dense network of marked hiking trails serves for exploring Veľká Fatra. Access routes to the main ridge mostly lead through the main valleys (Gaderská, Necpalská, Belianska, Ľubochnianska Valley). Some trails also pass through specially protected areas, such as nature reserves, national natural monuments, protected sites, and the like.

A problem during hiking trips is the prohibition of camping or bivouacking in the territory of Veľká Fatra National Park. Therefore, when planning your hike, you also need to plan accommodation. You can use the mountain hotel at Kráľova studňa, Chata pod Borišovom, the Military Recreation Facility at Smrekovica, or you can use available huts or designated sites. These are described and shown in more detail in the Visitor Regulations of Veľká Fatra National Park. Several educational trails have been established in the Veľká Fatra area, providing visitors with interesting information not only about the National Park in general, but also about the specific area where they are located. Among the most visited is the Educational Trail Along the Ridge of Veľká Fatra and in Gaderská Valley, the trail leading to Blatnický Castle.

Especially the Bralná part attracts many rock climbers with its rock formations. Here, too, it should be remembered not to violate the visiting rules.

Tourists are also attracted by the only accessible cave in the Great Fatra, the Harmanecká Cave, or the picturesque Vlkolínec with the best preserved folk architecture and the UNESCO World Natural and Cultural Heritage List.

Winter hiking is also popular in Veľká Fatra. However, it is limited to periods when there is no avalanche danger. Veľká Fatra is in fact one of the most avalanche-prone areas in Slovakia, especially in the area of Ploská, Krížna, and Ostredok.

Of the ski resorts, the most popular are ; Donovaly, Jasenská dolina, Malino Brdo, Turecká.
