🦉 Another day with an expert in the Veľká Fatra – this time about zoology! 🐾
Last Saturday (July 12, 2025), the Administration of the Veľká Fatra National Park organized another in the series of popular “Days with an Expert”. This time, Ing. Mária Apfelová and I focused on zoology – the diverse and fascinating world of animals that inhabit our Veľká Fatra forests, meadows and rocks.
Together, we walked through the Gaderská Valley, the most visited area within the national park by the public and at the same time an area with rich biodiversity. We stopped at the breeding site of amphibians, where we talked about their importance for the ecosystem and what threats they face today. At the same time, the participants created a living chain and together moved several tens of liters of water from a nearby stream into the drying pond, thus ensuring a brighter future for many developing amphibians.
Our route continued to Blatnica Castle, where an expert introduced us to the animals living around the castle cliff – from insects to birds of prey. Then we climbed up to the Mažárna cave, which is home to various bat species. We have discussed the specifics of their behavior, the protection of wintering grounds and their role in nature.
Throughout the hike, we discussed many interesting topics – from carnivores and birds, through bats, reptiles and amphibians, to invertebrates. There were also questions from the participants, sharing of experiences from the field and practical demonstrations.
