Harmanecká tisina National Nature Reserve
The Harmanec Silence National Nature Reserve was declared in 1949 and has an area of 20.4 hectares. It is part of the Veľká Fatra National Park. There are forest communities of fir and beech forest with the occurrence of the Tertiary relic of the common yew (Tacsus baccata). This is its largest natural occurrence in Europe. To this day, about 1500 specimens grow here, the oldest of which are about 500 – 600 years old. Common yew grows here in beech forests with an admixture of spruce, fir and maple. Therefore, the subject of protection is mainly the common yew, but also karst forms of georelief. As this National Nature Reserve borders on the road 1/14 ŠTUREC, which is the main route from Turiec to Banská Bystrica, a lot of unwanted municipal waste gets into its peripheral parts. Waste is left here by motorists, especially in the parts where rest areas are located.
