As already mentioned in the article “Monitoring of bears in the Veľká Fatra Mountains”, not all telemetrized individuals had the device deactivated and turned off, so we proceeded to this time-consuming and professionally demanding work. We monitored the bear with the working designation “50” for about a month, until we successfully narcotized and disconnected the telemetry device on 7.10.2018. Preparations, logistics and monitoring were handled by Ing. Since the bear was put to sleep directly, without a trapping device, it requires high-quality monitoring of the animal’s movement in a specific location. In this case, it made it much easier for us to use online cameras compared to spring sleep, thanks to which we had an accurate overview of the movement and behavior of a particular individual with ear tag No. 50. In the past, we used exclusively MMS trail cameras, which were much more difficult. The use of online cameras significantly contributes to increasing the efficiency of the entire work. We were able to follow the whole situation exactly: when the animal arrives at the site, whether it is really “our” individual, what the bear did after hitting the narcotic arrow in which direction it was running. The narcotization itself took place in complete darkness and thanks to infrared illumination we “saw” even in the dark. We were able to replay and analyze the whole situation on the camera several times until the actual search for the “shot” bear was carried out. In this case, a high-quality hunting dog plays a big role, which tracks and traces the animal, as the bear runs a few more 100 meters after narcoticization. In our case, we used an experienced dachshund, who led us about 300 meters to a sleeping bear. It is important to first make sure that the bear sleeps soundly and that the anesthesia works as it should. Here, the professional experience of the person who provides narcotization is essential to be able to estimate the weight of the animal and the dosage, for his own safety. In our case, the whole event went smoothly and very quickly, especially thanks to the experience of Ing. Salvomír Finď. The bear’s collar was removed and then we waited until the narcotic substance was partially metabolized and the bear woke up. Everything was done from a safe distance. Thanks to the online camera transmission, we were able to see the next evening that the bear returned to the site safely and walked in front of the camera again. Most likely, anesthesia erases the animal’s short-term memory, and it does not remember putting it to sleep. Putting bears to sleep in the wild without the use of trapping equipment is therefore the most humane way to carry out this activity, the animal does not suffer from stress and after being hit by a dart it often has no idea what actually happened and therefore does not run far.

Shortly after finding the bear under anaesthesia.
