This day has its roots in 1906, when the international Convention on the Conservation of Useful Birds was signed. Since then, we have been reminded of the importance of birds for our ecosystems and their protection. 1. April is not a random date – it is at this time that most migratory bird species return to us not only from their wintering grounds.

Birds play a key role in nature. They help maintain ecological balance, the number of insectivorous birds represents biological protection against pests in agriculture, control insect populations (e.g. mosquitoes, flies) without the need for the application of chemical preparations. Predatory bird species, but also waders such as the grey heron, the white stork, participate in the regulation of rodents. They control insect populations and contribute to plant pollination. International Bird Day is an opportunity to raise awareness of the threats that birds face, such as habitat loss, deforestation, destruction of suitable places for nesting, overnight stays, wintering, etc. Environmental pollution, intensification and chemicalization in agriculture reduce the food supply for many species. Urbanization, fragmentation of the landscape by roads, construction, power lines cause a higher rate of unnatural mortality. For example, in the Breeding Station at the Administration of the Veľká Fatra National Park, the most frequently injured birds are treated after hitting a building, power lines or electric shock.

The Veľká Fatra National Park is home to and nesting sites for many rare and interesting bird species. Thanks to the diverse habitats, which include deep forests, mountain meadows and bodies of water, we can find a diverse variety of bird species here. Here are some of them:

The golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) is the largest nesting bird of prey in the Veľká Fatra, which circles above the rock walls and nests in remote parts of the park. This bird is known for its strength and agility, which allows it to hunt a variety of prey species, including smaller mammals and birds.

The capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus) and the black grouse (Tetrao tetrix) are birds that find refuge in deep forests, or in the peripheral parts of mountain forests and meadows of the Veľká Fatra. These birds are highly endangered and their conservation is an important part of the care of the national park.

The red-winged mason warbler (Tichodroma muraria) is a smaller but very rare bird that nests on rock walls. Its characteristic red wings and ability to climb rocks make it a unique inhabitant of the Veľká Fatra.

In addition to iconic birds of prey and crested birds, we can also find other interesting species here.

The crested (Lophophanes cristatus) is a small bird with a distinctive plume on its head. It can often be seen in coniferous forests, where it looks for food in the form of insects and seeds.

The spruce crooked warbler (Loxia curvirostra) is a bird with a specially adapted beak that allows it to easily open spruce cones and obtain seeds. The crooked beetle can nest even in the middle of winter, especially if it has enough food available – pine cone seeds. It is one of the typical species of spruce mountain forest.

The woodpecker (Fringilla coelebs) is a common bird that is found in various types of forests. She is known for her melodic singing, which can often be heard during the spring and summer months

The Veľká Fatra is a paradise for nature lovers. Observing these birds in their natural habitat is an experience that reminds us of the importance of nature conservation and biodiversity conservation.

For the protection of birds of European importance, a significant part of the population of which nests in our country, the Protected Bird Area of Veľká Fatra and the Protected Bird Area of Malá Fatra and part of the Malá Fatra Mountains and the Protected Bird Area of Malá Fatra have been declared in Veľká Fatra and in part of the Malá Fatra Mountains. In addition to birds of prey and owls, woodpeckers are also subject to protection, which by their activities prepare nesting sites for many other species of hollow nesting birds.

International Bird Day, celebrated annually on April 1, is dedicated to the protection and learning of birds.
