The date of the international waterbird census, in which the employees of the Ve\u013ek\u00e1 Fatra National Park Administration based in Martin were also involved, was in 2025 in the period from 11 to 26 January, with the main date of the census during the weekend of 18 \u2013 19 January 2025. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

The program is coordinated by Wetlands International based in the Netherlands, and together with Slovakia, about 100 countries are involved in it. The aim of the programme is to monitor data on the occurrence of wintering and migratory waterfowl, as well as to identify long-term trends in their abundance and distribution. Slovakia has been systematically involved in the international census, which has been going on for 57 years, since 1991. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

The Administration of the Ve\u013ek\u00e1 Fatra National Park, together with SOS\/BirdLife Slovakia as the coordinator of the census by individual regions, carried out the census on 27 sections of watercourses, ponds and rivers in our territorial jurisdiction in Turiec and Liptov. We observed many species of birds, the most numerous were mallard, grey heron, aquarius, but we also observed rarer species such as kingfisher, grey crested warbler, great beluche, great grebe, little grebe, black coot, or the rare winter occurrence of the mountain wagtail (at 3 sites) and white wagtail (at 1 site). Along with waterfowl, we also recorded the occurrence of other protected species such as other bird species, but also mammals such as the river otter or the European beaver, which is reoccupying the surroundings of watercourses. <\/span><\/p>\n

On Saturday, January 18, 2025, a joint census of great cormorants was also carried out at roosting sites, which is the best way to find out their current occurrence in Slovakia without repeated (duplicate) records. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

The protection of waterfowl and their habitats \u2013 wetlands is very important not only for the birds themselves, but also for wetland habitats, which are one of the most diverse, productive and biologically rich ecosystems in our country and in the world. They help us mitigate climate extremes, capture water when it is plentiful and moisturize their surroundings in times of drought. They are an irreplaceable habitat for waterfowl. <\/span><\/p>\n
