The main goal of the project was to improve the condition of selected species and their habitats in the selected project area in the Administration of the Veľká Fatra National Park based in Martin. It was a non-investment project that focused primarily on:

– afforestation and protection of tree species,

– mapping of trees for life and “dead wood”,

– mapping and increasing the number of nesting and hatcheries of selected animal species,

– Tourism management, control and elimination of negative phenomena in the territory, tourist census,

– mapping the occurrence of invasive plants, selected species of protected animals and plants,

– protection of the area against fires.

One of the long-term problems in the area of interest is the absence of forests with trees of various species and ages. As part of the implementation of the project, 30,000 diverse deciduous and coniferous tree species, such as beech, fir and larch, were planted, which will create strong mixed forests in the future. The activities of the administration employees created elements of protection of young forest stands against weeds by trimming, and in the autumn period, protection against game bites was carried out, where maple and fir trees were preferred. Employees mapped old, richly branched trees and trees with natural cavities, as well as dead trees in forests, which provide many endangered species with space for shelter and also a rich source of food.

In the area of interest, areas to which amphibians are tied have been identified, but their abundance is significantly decreasing and the localities where they reproduce are also decreasing and many hatcheries are drying up or overgrown with vegetation. As part of the project activities, it was possible to create more than 20 replacement hatcheries in the Ľubochnianska Valley, thanks to which more water will be retained in the country.

At the same time, due to the fact that the presence of invasive plant species is a great threat to all habitats, employees preventively detected their occurrence, especially around roads and sidewalks, where they are most likely to spread.

Tourists of the national park will certainly appreciate the revitalization of hiking trails and making them passable. In the summer, there was a census of tourists, with the most visited area becoming the Gaderská valley with an average number of 700 tourists a day. In total, up to 6,900 tourists visited the Veľká Fatra National Park in one week. Also due to this high number, it is very important that visitors to the national park protect nature and do not go off the marked hiking trails, do not pick herbs or do not leave waste in nature. Only through joint efforts will we preserve the beauty of nature for future generations.
