New elements are modified and added in an additive way, which contributes to defining the differences between the current state and the future form. In this way, the missing qualities are added in a number of visible changes that contribute to the formation of the object’s new function. The approach chosen is reflected throughout the design. Consistently and understandably both outdoors and indoors.

The most significant change is the connection of the northern and southern sides of the area through the first above-ground floor. The originally strictly separated exterior spaces are optically touching through the loose layout and views of the enlarged windows. This is also helped by the artfully situated new entrances, which work with the potential of the nearby park and the illuminated south side. The terrace and barrier-free ramp expand the internal limits of the rooms, where the largest movement of people is expected. The two-sided layout of the central space also improves visitor throughput. The only complaint is the low ground clearance of the multifunctional room, which is due to the existing condition. The other floors are divided according to individual functions and minor modifications improve the original character of the layout. The central tract is preserved, but the individual rooms offer added value with their layout. The interior layout culminates in the roof plane, which is followed by an added staircase and a new elevator. There, visitors can expect a green oasis with educational elements and a circular shelter, which is sensitively embedded in the overall composition of the building.

Exterior modifications are also conditioned by the analytical approach of the design. Cleaning of redundant objects, incorporating parking into greenery or removing fencing so that maximum outdoor areas for visitors are used. The aviary, which is located above ground level, with an infirmary located directly below it, is also sensitively designed. Thanks to this, handicapped animals can be less disturbed. Sustainable finishes of the building and exterior surfaces contribute to the sensitive expression and accentuation of the essence of the ecological approach of the entire design.

2nd place (participant no. 6) – A B. A functional change does not have to bring with it radical adjustments. The new content can also be contained in the original perimeter of the building. The design tries to work with this idea through details and thus build on the benefits of the original architecture.

The main entrance is situated on the north side of the courtyard. By adding a large terrace with residential stairs, it fundamentally changes the conditions in the perception of the building. Operationally, it separates short-term users from long-term users, for whom the original entrance is preserved. The layout of the central space is variable. The greatest added value is offered by the multifunctional space, which extends over two floors by demolishing the ceiling. Above this space, there is also a footbridge that connects a separate part of the office of the intervention team within the second floor above. Other floors use the original facilities and modify the layout in favor of better operation. However, this is not the case everywhere, and despite the good location of the common areas, there are hygienic collisions and mixing of the animal infirmary with the food warehouse, or the movement of the intervention team near the kitchen. The building is wheelchair accessible, with a comprehensive access to the roof terrace. It has a supplementary character and would deserve a more detailed elaboration.

On the contrary, the façade of the building is enriched with a sophisticated system with passive thermal and technical properties. In principle, the sizes of the openings are maintained, but by changing the fit of the window frames, greater glazing is achieved. The design in the exterior counts on the removal of other smaller objects, as an understandable consequence of the minimalist approach. However, fragments of the original fencing elements and leaving parking on the south side unnecessarily fragment publicly accessible areas. This loses the potential of the qualities of exterior use. Nevertheless, the proposal remains very refined in nature.

3rd place (participant no. 1) – BO s.r.o.

Jana Benková, Juraj Benko

The concept of the design becomes the creation of new layers and the search for unexplored possibilities in the original predispositions of internal and external structures. A relatively radical approach opens up new possibilities in the perception of the potentials that the original object hides. However, the legibility of these changes is not as obvious from the exterior as from the interior.

A significant author’s contribution to the design is the connection of the underground and above-ground floors with the addition of a new recessed “English courtyard”. Thanks to it, it is possible to let more daylight into the underground rooms and use their high headroom potential. There is a smaller space of a multifunctional room, which opens through two floors to the main entrance. In this way, the design works with the cut plane of the object in an attractive way, thanks to which it creates new spatial experiences. These are enhanced by high-quality interior design and attention to detail. The offices are designed with an emphasis on common areas and with the preservation of the central layout. The accommodation part has a corridor moved to the south façade due to the orientation of the rooms, but with the negative of reducing the capacity of beds on the first floor and the need to place additional rooms next to the offices. It is obvious that the change introduces an imbalance into the functional structure. The roof plane has the same effect, the neoplasm of which in the form of two small houses is as if extra and without significant added value.

The design works with the preservation of other buildings, changes their functional use and completes covered terraces and new entrances in their interspace. These intimate corners and microspaces of the common areas are a powerful moment. However, they fill a large part of the area at the expense of exterior areas. In terms of difficulty, it is generally a more complicated approach to the modification of the original building, which in many ways creates questions and lacks clarity.

List of participants in the first stage:

A BKPŠ

Atrium

noiz

Andrej Kocian

Peter Matúš Architects

BECAUSE

Pavol Hanzalík

DK Architekti (CZ)

ROAR

INDEX

Hantabal architects

three.fourteen (CZ)

Lines

Grau

Bálek Architects

De signum

Plusminus

Pupa Smerek

Michal Diviš Architects

YA_AR

a3studio

Siampakoulis Architecture (GR)

LIMArch

May Studio

BAKYTA

Fotta Popadič Architects

Archiholics

Cold architects

RAU

AIP project

A2 architects

KCA

madebygro

We congratulate the winners and at the same time thank all 33 participants who participated with their imaginative implementations.

The Administration of the Veľká Fatra National Park has announced a two-stage project competition for the Eco-Education Center of the Veľká Fatra National Park, which is to be built in the building of the former Forest Plant in Turčianske Teplice.
