The Administration of the Ve\u013ek\u00e1 Fatra National Park based in Martin has been implementing the project since 22.12.2023<\/p>\n
Project name: Ve\u013ek\u00e1 Fatra – Eradication of the red crayfish, its subsequent monitoring; monitoring and removal of non-native and invasive species of animals and plants; Renewal of the kennel<\/strong><\/p>\n Benefits of the project: Native communities of plants and animals and their habitats are threatened by the introduction and spread of invasive alien species. These are often more competitively successful, can spread faster (due to their reproductive strategy), are tolerant of a wide range of external environmental conditions (while also suiting significantly anthropogenically altered habitats). Biological invasions result in the loss of native species diversity in the affected area. From the point of view of effective and targeted protection of nature, biodiversity and landscape, it is therefore necessary to monitor the occurrence and management of invasive alien species within the territorial scope of the Administration of the Ve\u013ek\u00e1 Fatra National Park. A clear benefit will be the knowledge and control of the situation with the occurrence of alien and invasive species, the possibilities for their effective removal and the suppression of the spread at the expense of native and protected species. Without the necessary equipment, we are not able to implement the necessary measures, or our interventions are not effective compared to the strategies and success of alien and invasive species. The changing climate is conducive to the invasion of new species, and therefore in the future we expect more and more importance in the implementation of monitoring and finding ways to effectively control invasions. One of the tasks performed by the Administration of the Ve\u013ek\u00e1 Fatra National Park is the care of injured protected animal species. The abundance of populations of protected animal species is negatively affected by anthropogenic activities, e.g. infrastructure development, environmental pollution, habitat fragmentation, etc. Supporting the survival of individuals of protected species is very important for maintaining and improving the favourable status of their populations. The support from the envirofund will help us to equip the Kennel with the necessary material and technical equipment to improve the capture, transport, treatment and rehabilitation of protected animal species. This will increase the chance of survival of the station’s patients and improve the space for the necessary treatment and rehabilitation. With the equipment in the project, the Administration of the Ve\u013ek\u00e1 Fatra National Park will be able to more effectively implement the eradication of invasive species and improve the so-called “favourable habitat status” defined in the Habitats Directive. Since the legal personality of the National Park Administrations was established last year and our Administration has been expanding its staff since then, the required equipment will significantly facilitate the logistics and expansion of the activities described in the project (e.g. backpacks for the transfer of purchased project equipment to the field). In the case of optical instruments (magnifying glasses, phototechnology, microscope), it will allow us to improve research and public promotion of the eradication of invasive species, but also other species, including protected ones. The indestructible marking of the corners of the TMP will provide us with long-term monitoring of vegetation on the TMP.
